Description
Lao Qijia Village, hidden deep in the mountains of Chunri Township, Pingtung, is the Paiwan tribe’s oldest and most well-preserved slate house settlement.
Despite enduring countless floods and typhoons, these slate houses still stand strong, preserving the appearance of centuries past. Walking along the stone-paved paths, the terraced village unfolds before your eyes, as if stepping into the magical world of Castle in the Sky.

In the Paiwan language, “Qijia” means “in the middle,” as the village was once located between the former Bailu and Lili communities. To the east lies Shikeshan, the sacred ancestral mountain of the Paiwan people—accessible only with the guidance of an approved local elder or guide, adding to its mystery and reverence.

Here, there is no electricity and no internet, making it feel truly cut off from the outside world. Because of this isolation, the village has preserved 118 historical sites and 46 traditional slate houses, showcasing the purest form of Paiwan culture.

As locals, we can take you directly to Lao Qijia by car, without the need for long hikes. It’s the perfect experience for families to enjoy together—an escape from the hustle and bustle, and a journey into the most authentic indigenous lifestyle.
